Markup
No, not HTML, or XML, or the international standard SGML!
A different SGML: Street and Ground Markup Language :-)
The markup appearing on the streets and on the ground around Quincy.
You know - like spray-can gang tags, but these are done by workers in trucks with spray-cans of particular colors to show the underground utility locations.

Emily's Window
According to the note on the door, she is closed because she is still sick.
I am recovering from a cold myself (I can't remember the last time I had one),
but her window in the sunlight made me feel better.
They are only paper flowers growing beside a paper dress,
but as with the Paper Moon, you can believe that Spring is near.

Vote for Quincy
Vote for Quincy, CA as America's coolest small town!
Vote once a day, every day, for the next dozen days.
Here are scenes from today's first annual Quincy Groundhog Fever Festival.
For a few dollars, everyone gets to be a judge
of the chili cook-off (above).
Captain Cupcake (left and below)
didn't win the sweet eatin' contest.
He only ate cupcakes, not the donuts.
Maybe next year (or the next repeat of this day :-)

Everything is hi-tech.
The groundhog was carved to order - with a chainsaw.

Notice the prone snow-monster.

Jack-O-Post 2012
Here is this year's O'lamp-post - created as usual with no plan, electrical tape, scissors, and an orange

O-rings
I was going to post this photo when I took it the other day, but in the spirit of the NBC Olympics, I decided to delay the broadcast.

Remembrances
Once upon a time Memorial Day was May 30.
Back then, before the Act and before it was monetized,
it stood on its own as a day of remembrance.

Barn Quilts
I grew up in Pennsylvania, so I know about hex signs and distelfinks and such.

But today, walking to the grocery store with my canvas bag (it is Earth Day after all), I noticed that barn quilts have begun to appear here in Q-topia.

This one is a Japanese lantern motif on the Hop Sing cottage at Ada's Place.

Mike & Valerie caught in the act of "quilting" another Ada's Place cottage.

March Lamb
Finally, and just in the nick of time, gentler weather has arrived so that March can go out in the prescribed manner **.

Crocuses in a corner, tulips in a row.

** In the evening at the beginning of March, Leo the Lion rises in the east just after dusk to bring March in.
After the vernal equinox, the Sun is in Aries the Ram (lamb), the first sign of the zodiac. Therefore, at the end of March "the lamb" is setting in the west at dusk, and taking March out with it.
So from an astronomical point of view, the saying more correctly would be, "March comes in with the lion, and out with the lamb." However in this case meteorology trumps astronomy and so we say, "March comes in like a lion, and out like a lamb."
